From the skeletonized dial that reveals the depth of the movement’s architecture to the detachable variable-geometry rotor that automatically disengages when fully wound, the RM 30-01 is both a high-performance machine and a wearable piece of engineering art.
We recently had the pleasure of getting our hands on the 5N red gold version of this masterpiece at the Richard Mille boutique in Milan and thoroughly enjoyed the unique Richard Mille feel on our wrist: light yet solid, with every detail carefully considered.
Now, we are pleased to share some live images of the watch with our readers.
The 42.00 x 49.94 x 17.59 mm tonneau-shaped case, with 5N red gold back and bezel, is paired with a grade 5 titanium case middle.
Its three-part construction guarantees water resistance to 50 metres/165 feet, guaranteed by two nitrile O-ring seals.
Its surfaces are satin-brushed and its bevels polished for flawless finish.
Its weight has been reduced to a minimum (96 grams including the strap) to make it more comfortable on the wrist.
The skeletonised double dial combines titanium and sapphire to reveal the many details of the sophisticated movement.
The bridges and baseplate in grade 5 titanium have been designed to emphasise perspective and depth.
The 1.50 mm-thick curved sapphire crystal is perfectly adapted to the complex geometry of the case and is anti-glare treated on both sides.
The semi-instantaneous oversized date display is located in a horizontal aperture at 4 o'clock.
Above it, you can see the function selection indicator showing the current setting: W for winding, D for date correction and H for hand setting. Each function can be selected by operating the push-piece located at 2 o’clock, which operates in a similar way to a car’s gearbox.
To eliminate tension caused by overwinding, the variable-geometry rotor of the RM 30-01 (visible on the caseback) automatically disengages the winding mechanism once the power reserve reaches 55 hours.
This allows the 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour) RMAR2 movement to operate when the barrel torque benefits from the most stable torque/power ratio.
Once the power reserve falls below 40 hours, the rotor reengages to wind the barrel, allowing the oscillating mechanism to continue running while maintaining excellent chronometric performance.
These phases can be observed via the clutch engagement indicator located at 11 o’clock, which shows whether the rotor is in the winding phase (on) or disengaged (off).
The power reserve indicator is numbered from 0 to 55 in a visually appealing layout highlighted by a color transfer.
